Lithops, commonly called "living stones" or "split rocks," are tiny, stemless succulents native to arid regions of southern Africa. They mimic pebbles to hide from animals, growing only 1 to 2 inches tall with a pair of thick, fleshy leaves separated by a center cleft.

Key CharacteristicsAppearance: Two fused leaves resembling stones with translucent "leaf windows" on top that let light in for photosynthesis.

Flowers: Daisy-like yellow or white flowers bloom from the center cleft in autumn.

Lifespan: Very slow-growing but can live for decades.

Soil: Needs a fast-draining, highly gritty mineral mix (such as 50% pumice or perlite and 50% cactus soil) in a deep pot with a drainage hole.

Light: Requires bright direct sunlight, about 6 hours or more daily.

Watering Cycle:Water lightly only when the soil is completely dry and the tops of the leaves look slightly wrinkled.Never water during winter or when the plant is "splitting" (growing a new pair of inner leaves that consume the old ones).
